Opportunity for engagement: Legislative review of taxis and ride-hailing services

Publishing Date

The Province is seeking feedback from local governments on ride-hailing and passenger transportation regulations in BC. Senior or technical staff from local governments who are interested in contributing to a review of the regulations are invited to contact the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) to express interest.

Ride-hailing was introduced in BC in 2019 under a new provincial regulatory framework. In 2024, the Special Committee to Review Passenger Directed Vehicles assessed this framework and provided recommendations on a range of issues, including vehicle supply, safety, employment, environmental impacts, and service to rural and remote communities.

Building on the committee’s recommendations, MOTT is now reviewing current legislation and regulations and is seeking input from local governments. The goal is to identify potential improvements that support safe, accessible, and reliable transportation options across the province.

Key policy topics for discussion:

  • Tools to ensure a balanced passenger transportation system that is stable, responsive, and accessible
  • Improvements to licensing processes
  • Clarification of municipal authorities to regulate passenger-directed vehicles

How to participate:

Senior or technical staff from local governments are asked to email MOTT to express interest at PDVengagement@gov.bc.ca.
