Whereas over 700,000 British Columbians lack a family doctor, and the provincial population is growing at 1.7 annually while newly arrived and existing family doctors face prohibitive costs and scarcity of properly configured spaces for community clinics; And whereas newly mandated growth from the province would better serve our communities holistically by incorporating healthcare needs of new and existing residents: Therefore be it resolved that the Province work with local governments, Provincial and Local Divisions of Family Practice, and developers to encourage or require consideration of community health clinic spaces in new development, including but not limited to, providing provincial health infrastructure fundingsubsidies, provincially leased spaces, and connections between physicians and healthcare workers to understand and address community needs within new spaces.
Ministry of Health The Ministry of Health the Ministry recognizes the significant pressures facing our primary care system, including the challenges in continuing to connect people to a Family Physician or Nurse Practitioner and the challenges primary care practices encounter in securing appropriately configured clinic spaces. Port Moody is within the Fraser Northwest Primary Care Network PCN community that includes primary care resources for the PCN community, Port Moody Urgent and Primary Care Centre UPCC, and Umbrella Multicultural Cooperative Community Health Centre CHC, which include Family Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, nursing, Allied Health Providers and Indigenous resources. The Ministry relies upon Fraser Health Authority, local Divisions of Family Practice and municipalities to work collaboratively in determining the need in community for clinic spaces, identifying opportunities and developing solutions. Municipalities and local partners may also be interested to learn about the Community Healthcare System Playbook and Toolkit, which empowers community partners to play an active role in ensuring people in their community get improved access to health care, and outlines actions that organizations, municipalities, businesses, educational institutions and other community groups can take to support health care delivery locally. The Ministry is committed to working collaboratively with local municipalities, Divisions of Family Practice and regional Health Authorities to explore sustainable approaches that support the availability of community-based primary care within emerging and established neighbourhoods.
