Whereas rural communities cannot meet the challenges of climate change without a climate change and emergency management strategy for critical transportation networks; And whereas the Ministry of Transportation and Transit is not required to participate in local government planning processes; And whereas planning for growth in our communities is not feasible in the absence of any road network planning by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit: Therefore be it resolved that UBCM request that the Province instruct the Ministry of Transportation and Transit to collaborate with local governments on emergency access road plans for rural and unincorporated areas, upon request.
Ministry of Transportation and Transit The Ministry of Transportation and Transit collaborates with other ministries during emergency events, ensuring coordinated efforts to protect the people of British Columbia. This inter-ministerial approach strengthens preparedness and response strategies, helping mitigate risks and maintain critical infrastructure. The ministry actively engages with partner ministries, local governments, Indigenous communities, and stakeholders to plan for possible transportation disruptions. Part of this planning involves assessing alternative access routes, determining the most feasible options for communities in affected regions. The ministry does not have the capacity to participate in all local government planning processes; however, we may assist with traffic management plans during emergency situations upon request. Safety remains the ministrys top priority and concerns from the public are always at the forefront of decision-making, ensuring that unplanned closures are managed effectively and roadways are restored as quickly and safely as possible.
