In Budget 2026, the Province indicated that it would be slowing delivery of its housing commitments, and reallocating $1.4 billion from its housing strategy. On further inquiry UBCM learned that some of that the reallocation is coming from the Community Housing Fund, cancelling the current funding intake and indefinitely postponing future intakes as President Cori Ramsay told The Vancouver Sun.
The closure is taking effect retroactively, affectively cancelling affordable housing projects that are already in process across the province, as CBC reported. Communities across the province may be forced to cancel affordable housing projects and write off money already spent on pre-development work required to apply for programs like Community Housing Fund.
Squamish Councillor Jenna Stoner told Black Press her community has already spent over $500,000 to get a 100-unit project ready, but now without $17.8 million from the Province, it likely won’t go ahead.
