Whereas the provincial moose management decisions are guided by the Provincial Moose Management Framework; And whereas moose serve a significant role as a food source and further have cultural importance for Indigenous residents; And whereas provincial moose research has identified the need for intensive landscape-scale management to stem moose population declines; And whereas provincial moose research has identified the need to consider vegetation composition and re-growth during forestry planning and to identify region-specific forestry thresholds for moose: Therefore be it resolved that UBCM urge the provincial government to add moose habitat as a value to all future forestry landscape planning and resource development projects where moose habituate.
Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship Moose and Moose habitat is consistently identified as a value in forest landscape planning and land use planning throughout BCs interior. The BC Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardships WLRS Cumulative Effects Framework CEF has had a moose assessment procedure in place since 2018. The assessment includes both a habitat and population assessment component. The CEF moose assessment is currently being updated with improved habitat indicators. It is anticipated the entire habitat assessment will be complete and run for much of the province over the coming year. WLRS staff will engage Ministry of Forests staff to make moose habitat assessment available to forest landscape planning tables. CEF moose assessment data and information will also continue to be available for land use planning, objective-setting and decision-making processes in the resource management sectors.
