Whereas Canada Post Corporation is the primary postal operator in Canada; And whereas it has been reported that Canada Post unknowingly shipped controlled and illegal drug to and from individual residences and postal boxes; And whereas there is no oversight as to the age of the persons ordering the illegal substances throughout our province; And whereas British Columbias communities are experiencing devastation caused by illegal substance use among youth; And whereas the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor Generals office is responsible to advocate on behalf of the residents and youth of British Columbia: Therefore be it resolved that the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General advocate to Canada Post to implement immediate process changes, such as increasing the use of ion scanners, narcotic sniffing dogs, and other means to detect and divert illegal drugs.
Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Government recognizes reports of the use of Canada Post services to distribute illegal substances. We further recognize efforts at the federal level over the past several years have sought to amend the Canada Post Act and provide Canada Post with new tools to disrupt this use. This includes proposed amendments in Bill C-2 which is currently before Parliament. Government is committed to bringing an end to the toxic illicit drug crisis and is regularly engaged with our federal partners to collaborate on targeted efforts to disrupt the flow of fentanyl and other illegal substances both domestically and across our borders. We support efforts at the federal level to modernize relevant legislation to counter exploitation by organized crime groups and will continue to seek out additional opportunities and advocate for new tools and resources as required.
