WHEREAS vehicles speeding through situations where emergency vehicles are stopped is becoming an increasing hazard to those personnel on the roadway who are providing assistance, such as RCMP, ambulance, tow trucks with lights on or workers in a construction or maintenance zone; AND WHEREAS there is no legislation in place to penalize those drivers speeding through these areas: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that UBCM request that the provincial government implement legislation similar to Alberta that would make it an offence to pass stopped emergency vehicles on roadways at speeds greater than 60 kmh and double the fine for those vehicles speeding while passing stopped emergency vehicles on roadways.
