WHEREAS tetra-paks are increasingly used for a range of products including soups, milk and milk substitutes, creating packaging that ends up in landfills; AND WHEREAS the technology exists to efficiently recycle tetra-paks: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities encourage the provincial government to include in the deposit return system all products packaged in tetra-paks.

Provincial Response

Ministry of Environment The exemption for milk and milk substitute containers will be reviewed in 2006 as part of a general review of the entire beverage container program. As part of that review, the ministry will evaluate the progress made by the BC Dairy Council in developing a voluntary stewardship plan that is consistent with the principles in the Ministrys 2002 Industry Product Stewardship Business Plan. The Ministry intends to develop a prioritized list of products suitable for addition to the schedules of the Recycling Regulation. This list will be developed using the Marbek Process, which is available on the ministry website at http:wlapwww.gov.bc.caepdepdpaipsresources.html, and in consultation with stakeholders, especially local government.
