WHEREAS carbon monoxide CO, an invisible and odorless gas, can be harmful and even fatal to humans; AND WHEREAS there have been several recent incidents of dangerous CO levels in ice arenas that have caused illness requiring hospitalization to arena users: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities request that the Province amend the BC Building Code to make CO detectors mandatory in ice arenas.

Provincial Response

Ministry of Forests and Range BC Building Code addresses new construction, however ongoing maintenance is the responsibility of the building owner. WorkSafeBC has requirements for the control of worker exposure to exhaust from internal combustion engines in Part 5 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, which are enforced in the ongoing work of Board Prevention and Investigations officers. To supplement the Regulation, WorkSafeBC has been developing guidance documents on the application of emission requirements to indoor facilities, including ice arenas.
