The University of Victoria’s Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research has announced a webinar series examining alcohol policy in local governments. Registration is now open for the first two webinars in September. 

This work is part of the Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation (CAPE), an ongoing Canada-wide research project that has been working to assess provincial, territorial and federal alcohol policies and their ability to reduce harms associated with alcohol consumption.

The Ministry of Attorney General in BC is developing a proposal regarding prompt payment in the construction sector. 

Local Government Awareness Week starts on Sunday, May 11 and runs through to Saturday, May 17, 2025. 

Given that infrastructure is such a significant part of local government service delivery but is often underappreciated or overlooked by the public, infrastructure is the theme for the week. Local governments are invited to tell the infrastructure story of their community or region, and the steps that are being taken to ensure sustainable service delivery.

UBCM and BC Wildfire Service staff are hosting a webinar on May 7, 1:30pm to discuss 2025 updates to the BC Wildfire Service prohibitions. These prohibitions, commonly referred to as “fire bans,” are designed to limit the risk of wildfires and address public safety concerns during fire season. During the webinar, BC Wildfire Service staff will review updated language to the prohibitions, discuss the implications for local governments, and hold a question and answer session.

Following last year’s release of the B.C. Flood Strategy, the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) is hosting two unique half-day virtual engagement sessions regarding flood policy guidance. Interested First Nations and local governments are asked to register by 5:00 p.m. on March 17th.

Local government staff and elected officials are invited a webinar about Next Generation 911 Cybersecurity on March 19, 2025, 1:30 – 3:00 pm. Presenters from the Ministry of Citizens’ Services will explore how cybersecurity best practices will be utilized in making a safe and secure switch to NG911, and why cybersecurity needs to be at the forefront of NG911 implementation. 

Registration for the 2025 Regional District Chair & CAO Forum is now open. The Forum will take place April 22 – 23 at the Hotel Grand Pacific in Victoria, BC. 

The $105 registration fee includes coffee breaks on April 22, and breakfast and lunch on April 23.
