Input on Flood Management Guidelines

Publishing Date

The Province is currently updating the B.C. Flood Hazard Area Land Use Management Guidelines, which were last amended in 2018. These guidelines provide suggestions for local governments on floodplain mapping, flood risk assessments, resiliency planning, and development approvals. Local governments are encouraged to provide input during the public review period, which runs until January 31, 2027.

The Province will host virtual engagement sessions in early 2027 (dates and times to be determined). The first session will invite First Nations and local governments to identify any gaps, priorities and opportunities to support the development of new guidelines. The second session is aimed at subject matter and technical experts, and will examine approaches to land use planning to reduce flood risk. Registration is now open for those sessions.

The draft guidelines have been developed by an external agency contracted by the Province, with contributions from a technical subcommittee that included members from the Province, First Nations, local governments, and other relevant stakeholders.

These updates are intended to bring the guidelines into alignment with recent legislation, the new B.C. Flood Strategy, and other best practices and standards.
