UBCM is gathering local governments February 13-14 in Vancouver to take stock of the significant challenges and changes facing BC’s housing development system. Recent data shows that the province’s population is surging as a result of changes that have been made by the Government of Canada in recent years. Local governments throughout the province are also analyzing multiple pieces of legislation introduced by the Province in the fall of 2023 that aim at increasing the supply of new homes.

Immediately following the Electoral Area Directors Forum is the 2024 LGLA Forum, January 31-February 2 in Richmond. The program aims to inspire, empower and connect local government and First Nations elected officials, and senior staff. Registration is open until January 29, or until event capacity is reached.

The Province is hosting a series of webinars for local government staff to support implementation of Bills 44 (small scale multi-unit housing, planning reforms), 46 (development finance), and 47 (transit-oriented areas). Each webinar will include a presentation of technical details and legislative requirements and provide an opportunity to ask questions of subject matter experts.

The provincial government is expected to table new emergency management legislation this fall. In anticipation of the pending legislation, the BC Association of Emergency Managers and BC Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness are hosting a series of webinars open to local government representatives.
