Among the housing-related legislation passed by the Province in fall 2023 was Bill 47 which will legislate minimum density requirements around designated transit hubs. In a session at the 2024 UBCM Housing Summit, Transit-oriented development under Bill 47, representatives from three BC cities with significant transit hubs will examine the implications of the bill.
On April 20 – 24, more than 600 firefighting professionals, FireSmart experts and Indigenous, municipal, and community leaders will gather for the 2024 Wildfire Resiliency and Training Summit. Presentations will focus on how to recover from an unprecedented wildfire season, rebuild and prepare for future wildfires, and lead discussions in research, technologies, and best practices.
Bill 46: Housing Statutes (Development Financing) Amendment Act provides a new regime for development finance in British Columbia. To better understand the legislation and its implications for financing community development, UBCM is convening a panel of local government leaders at our 2024 Housing Summit.
BC’s Housing Minister, Ravi Kahlon, will take questions from local government leaders during a session on February 13 at UBCM’s 2024 Housing Summit. UBCM is convening the summit to discuss the significant challenges and changes facing the housing system in BC. The two-day event, February 13-14, will help local governments take stock of recent changes to the way housing is planned and developed.
The Housing Summit will give UBCM members the opportunity to unpack the myriad of implications from the housing legislation introduced in the fall sitting, in particular at the Recent Housing Legislation and the Law session on Wednesday.
“The more one explores the legislation, the more one finds additional financial, infrastructure, density, environmental and procedural impacts and obligations that are interconnected,” said panelist and lawyer Don Lidstone.
UBCM is gathering local governments February 13-14 in Vancouver to take stock of the significant challenges and changes facing BC’s housing development system. Recent data shows that the province’s population is surging as a result of changes that have been made by the Government of Canada in recent years. Local governments throughout the province are also analyzing multiple pieces of legislation introduced by the Province in the fall of 2023 that aim at increasing the supply of new homes.
UBCM is hosting a housing summit for local governments on February 13-14 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver. The 2024 Housing Summit: Local Vision, Local Action will focus on the continuing crisis in housing affordability and attainability, and consider the effects of recent provincial legislation that has introduced fundamental changes to BC’s housing system.
Immediately following the Electoral Area Directors Forum is the 2024 LGLA Forum, January 31-February 2 in Richmond. The program aims to inspire, empower and connect local government and First Nations elected officials, and senior staff. Registration is open until January 29, or until event capacity is reached.
The Province is hosting a series of webinars for local government staff to support implementation of Bills 44 (small scale multi-unit housing, planning reforms), 46 (development finance), and 47 (transit-oriented areas). Each webinar will include a presentation of technical details and legislative requirements and provide an opportunity to ask questions of subject matter experts.
The provincial government is expected to table new emergency management legislation this fall. In anticipation of the pending legislation, the BC Association of Emergency Managers and BC Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness are hosting a series of webinars open to local government representatives.
