In June, local government staff and elected officials were invited to attend provincial virtual engagement sessions to discuss the draft of the next B.C. Road Safety Strategy, along with its first action plan. Over 100 representatives from 51 local governments and other organizations attended these sessions. Those that did not attend, and that still wish to provide input, may do so until August 31, 2026.
Webinars presented an opportunity for local government attendees to offer their input on how the B.C. Road Safety Strategy could be adjusted to better reflect the road safety needs of communities throughout B.C. Many participants indicated that they would like to see increased collaboration and transparency between the Province and local governments. The importance of having a Strategy that recognizes different regions’ needs was also raised - noting differences in road safety approaches and priorities between rural and remote areas and urban settings.
Many calls were made for increased speed management and enforcement, and decreased speed limits, and many participants brought up the need to protect vulnerable road users and to integrate active transportation into safe road planning. Participants also commented on the desire for access to high quality road safety data, and for updates to road safety legislation and regulations. Most participants expressed positive views on the use of automated enforcement.
Members of the B.C. Road Safety Strategy project team are continuing to review feedback from the engagement sessions, and will use it to inform further development of the Strategy and its action plans. Summaries of each session’s feedback will be provided to those sessions’ attendees later this summer. The completed Strategy is expected to be published in late 2026.
Those unable to attend an engagement session, or who did attend and have further thoughts to share, may submit written feedback about the Strategy and action plan until August 31, 2026.
