UBCM and the Province have a joint working group focused on developing a framework for engaging local governments in Province-First Nations negotiations. The working group was formed to improve local government engagement in Province-First Nations negotiations, as was committed to in the 2024 MOU between UBCM and the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation. At a joint session during the 2025 UBCM Convention, the working group solicited feedback from local governments to shape its work.
The working group, which includes participation from the ministries responsible for Indigenous relations and local governments, will continue meeting through 2026, refining materials and incorporating feedback gathered at the Convention session.
