National Infrastructure Assessment

Publishing Date

In response to the federal government’s call for comments, UBCM has made a submission on Canada’s proposed National Infrastructure Assessment (NIA). UBCM recommended several elements for assessing, co-ordinating and financing a national infrastructure strategy that would create and maintain the infrastructure BC’s communities need.

UBCM called for local governments to be incorporated in the design and implementation of the NIA to ensure that the diverse needs, experiences and perspectives of all sized communities are reflected in the infrastructure strategy. Our submission also highlighted the need for:

  • long-term, predictable and sustainable funding for local governments in recognition of their role as the largest owners of public infrastructure;
  • the integration of climate and asset management lenses into the strategy; and
  • maximum local government choice and flexibility in ensuring funds are invested in the areas with the greatest need and economic return.

The federal government plans on developing an advisory body following feedback on the NIA proposal.
