Single use plastics bylaw webinar

The Ministry of Environment will host a webinar on March 25th on the development of a draft regulation that will detail how municipalities may prohibit and impose requirements on specific single-use plastics.

In February 2021, the Province announced the approval of four more municipal single use plastic ban bylaws, joining five other municipalities that are implementing plastic bans tailored to the needs of their communities. The Province has heard from many more municipalities in B.C. that are looking to enact bylaws to regulate single-use plastics.  To support these efforts, the Province is moving ahead with the process to bring forward regulatory updates that can allow municipalities to implement bans on single-use plastics without requiring provincial approval.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is in the process of drafting a Minister’s Regulation under the Community Charter that will detail how municipalities may prohibit and impose requirements on specific single-use plastics. The proposed Regulation is intended to enable municipalities to enact plastics ban bylaws, without the need to seek Ministerial approval, while also enhancing provincial consistency.

The Ministry will be hosting a webinar on March 25, 2021 at 10 AM PST to provide details of the key areas being considered in the development of the draft regulation.

The objectives of the webinar are to:

  • Review the purpose of the Minister’s Regulation
  • Provide information on the key areas under consideration that will be used to draft the Regulation
  • Consider implications of the different areas and obtain feedback from interested local governments
