Railway suicide-prevention campaign

Publishing Date

Operation Lifesaver Canada (OL) has launched a new railway suicide-prevention campaign, Today is Better, as a resource for those struggling with their mental health. This public-awareness campaign consists of 11 personal stories told by those who’ve sought help after experiencing suicidal thoughts.

According to OL, each year in Canada more than 100 people are seriously injured or killed in railway crossing and trespassing incidents on federally regulated rail lines. Approximately 43 of these incidents are suicides.

Operation Lifesaver Canada was created to work with a variety of stakeholders (e.g. local governments, rail industry, law enforcement) to increase awareness regarding rail safety. Membership includes four local government representatives appointed by UBCM.
