In Memoriam: Bill Goodacre

Bill Goodacre, a former Town of Smithers Councilor over a period of 19 years and the MLA for Bulkley Valley-Stikine for six, passed away last week at the age of 67. Upon his retirement from public office in 2018, Goodacre received the Freedom of the Municipality, the Town’s highest honour.

Goodacre is remembered for his sincere commitment to social justice with regard to local First Nations communities.  “Bill was a tireless ally for indigenous people, especially the Wet’suwet’en, and was particularly passionate about the Shared Histories project, for which he was an instigator and champion,” said current Mayor Taylor Bachrach. “He stuck up for those on the margins, those without homes, and those among us who were suffering. He held a vision of community based on compassion and most of all he wanted people to be kind to each other.”

A Celebration of Life was held in rememberance of Goodacre in the Friendship Centre in Smithers on Saturday, February 2.
