New Funding for Housing Needs Reports

The Union of BC Municipalities is working with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing to develop a three-year funding program to support local governments to meet the new provincial requirement to complete housing needs reports.

The program is in response to the recent legislative change (Local Government Statutes (Housing Needs Reports) Amendment Act) requiring local governments, at least every five years, to prepare a housing needs report.

The intent of these changes is to strengthen the ability of local governments to understand what kinds of housing are most needed in their communities, and help the provincial government appropriately target its resources. The Province will work closely with local governments and will provide support to obtain the data through a $5 million investment over three years.

The new requirements will come into force when the applicable regulations are adopted.

More information will be forthcoming in early 2019, which will include key considerations for local governments that are working to meet this requirement. UBCM anticipates offering the first round of funding in the spring of 2019.
