Passing of Mayor Adelaar

Jack Adelaar, Mayor of Bowen Island Municipality, passed away on October 22, 2014 following a lengthy battle with cancer. Mr. Adelaar was elected Mayor in the 2011 local government general election.

Jack was born in Wolverhampton, England during World War II.  His family returned to Holland following the war before immigrating to Canada in 1951. The Adelaars settled in Weymouth, Nova Scotia. Jack attended Kings College School and Kings and Dalhousie University for his undergraduate and law degrees.

Jack met his wife of 45 years, Maryon, while working in Montreal during Expo 67.  They moved to Vancouver where he practiced law for the next forty years.  During that time, Jack and Maryon became very active in the contemporary art scene. These were decades of learning, travel and friendship with many artists and collectors from around the world.

“I wish every comfort to Mayor Adelaar’s family, as well as Bowen Island Council and staff who are grieving his loss,” said UBCM President Sav Dhaliwal.  “His death is a loss to the island and local government in British Columbia”

Adelaar was diagnosed with cancer in 2012.  He is survived by his wife Maryon, sons Alex (Margaret-Jean), Jay (Janet), grandchildren, Payton, Trey, Rio, Angus and Alistair.

Details for the memorial service will be made available on Bowen Island’s website.
