Anti-Spam Legislation and The Compass

The Government of Canada's new anti-spam legislation will go into effect on July 1, 2014. The intent of the legislation is to ensure that commercial electronic messages are distributed with the consent of recipients, clearly identify the sender and provide an unsubscribe feature.

UBCM took a consent-based approach to the development of The Compass from the date of its launch in October 2012. We are confident that our practices are currently aligned with the new law and that we can demonstrate this if so required.

Local governments that have not already done so are encouraged to review the anti-spam law and regulations and consider if any current communications practices or tools fit the criteria for “commercial electronic messages”.
