Update on BC Transit Review Implementation

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) with the support of BC Transit and in collaboration with the Union of BC Municipalities is moving forward in implementing government's response to the BC Transit Independent Review.

UBCM members will recall that in September 2012, the Province indicated its support for the recommendations coming forward from the BC Transit Independent Review Panel. While the Review made recommendations for improvements with respect to all partners, it specifically highlighted the critical role of local government partners, with several recommendations focusing on areas where greater collaboration would facilitate the success of transit in the province.

To assist in moving forward with implementation, UBCM, in partnership with MOTI and BC Transit, established a working group composed of local government staff to:

  • Provide a vehicle for the Ministry, BC Transit and local governments to work in collaboration, to implement the recommendations of the BC Transit Independent Review.
  • To strengthen the partnerships between Local government, BC Transit and the Ministry.
  • Create opportunities for sharing relevant information.

To date, much progress has been made to implement the recommendations of the Review. MOTI is tracking the progress on its website and members are encouraged to review the status of the various recommendations. The three parties in cooperation with the working group members will continue to work toward full implementation in the coming months.

UBCM wishes to thank those local government representatives who have offered their advice, time and assistance to the working group. Local governments that would like to join the working group or provide input on specific recommendations are invited to contact Marie Crawford, UBCM Associate Executive Director.
