It's Resolutions Time!

The main forum for UBCM policy-making is the annual resolutions cycle. It provides an opportunity for local governments of all sizes and from all areas of the province to express concerns, share their experiences and take a united position.

It's time for UBCM members to submit resolutions to Area Associations for consideration – AKBLG and AVICC resolutions are due before the end of the month. Check out the guidelines on the UBCM website for top-notch resolution writing tips, and call on UBCM staff for assistance.

Submit Resolutions to Area Associations

Members should submit resolutions to Area Associations first for consideration. Resolutions endorsed by Area Associations at their annual meetings are submitted automatically to UBCM for consideration and do not need to be re-submitted to UBCM by the sponsor.

Area Association submission deadlines for 2013 are as follows:

AKBLG     February 18
AVICC     February 25
SILGA     March 1
NCLGA    March 1
LMLGA    March 22

Please contact your Area Association for resolution submission procedures at the regional level.

A resolution may be submitted directly to UBCM if it addresses an issue that arises after the Area Association annual meeting. In this case, local governments may submit council- or board-endorsed resolutions to UBCM prior to June 30, 2012.

Drafting Resolutions

Staff and elected officials are strongly encouraged to follow the writing guidelines provided in the Resolutions Procedures section of the UBCM website. A clear, concise resolution is easier to understand, and this increases the likelihood that the membership will grant it their endorsement. Further, clear resolutions will engender more direct responses from the provincial or federal government, or relevant organization.

As an added bonus, your colleagues will be grateful not to have to deal with technical jargon, legalese, or muddled language. Better resolutions make for happier UBCM members!
