Update: Local Elections Campaign Finance

A bill to amend the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act moved to third reading in the legislature last week. UBCM discussed the proposed legislation with Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Selina Robinson at its Executive meeting earlier this month and expressed concerns about a proposed $1200.00 contribution limit for candidates who self-finance their campaigns.

Following the meeting, President Booth conveyed correspondence to the Minister outlining concerns raised during the meeting.

Last week in the House debates, following upon amendments proposed by the Official Opposition and in response to concerns raised by UBCM, Minister Robinson committed to recommending a regulation to government that will allow candidates to self-contribute up to an additional $1200.00 to their campaign in 2018.

In her comments to UBCM at the Executive meeting, Minister Robinson also indicated that the Government would review the impacts of the proposed changes to local election campaign finance rules following the 2018 local government elections.
