Communities on the Move

The BC Healthy Living Alliance (BCHLA) has drafted “Communities on the Move”, a declaration calling for planning and investment in transportation infrastructure to support active transportation, improved equity and safety, and rural transportation needs.

The BCHLA works to advance health-promoting policies, environments, programs and services by addressing underlying determinants of health. UBCM supports BCHLA advocacy efforts as a voting member on the Coordinating Committee.

The declaration asks the Province for:

  • Increased support and long-term funding for transit
  • Investment in a Provincial Active Transportation Strategy to support the development of local cycling and walking infrastructure
  • Investment in innovative transportation systems for rural communities
  • A commitment to equity in transportation
  • A commitment to road safety

These requests largely parallel those made by UBCM membership in resolutions calling for increased investments in transit, the development of a rural transportation strategy, and greater funding for cycling infrastructure.

Local governments interested in supporting the declaration may access it via the BCHLA webpage.
