New Factsheet on Burning

The Ministry of Environment has developed a factsheet that outlines the environmental laws that apply to burning in BC. This factsheet may be useful to local government and fire department staff, in responding to the public on this topic.

This factsheet deals with requirements under the Environmental Management Act, while acknowledging that anyone burning material must also comply with local bylaws that exist for fire protection and/or air quality.

As noted in the factsheet, backyard burning of garbage and other “prohibited materials” is not allowed under provincial law, except with specific authorization. Air pollution from burning of waste contains toxic pollutants, can generate plumes of smoke that are unsightly and/or a public safety concern, can generate odors, and can result in public complaints.

Questions about the factsheet can be directed to Markus Kellerhals or Maureen Bilawchuk.
