UBCM Welcomes Appointment of Honourable Peter Fassbender

Union of BC Municipalities President Sav Dhaliwal congratulates Peter Fassbender, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood, on his appointment as Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and Minister Responsible for TransLink. Premier Christy Clark announced Mr. Fassbender’s appointment as she unveiled changes to cabinet responsibilities earlier today.

“Minister Fassbender’s roots are in local government. In addition to his experience in local government, he served on the UBCM executive between 2011 and 2013,” said President Dhaliwal. “With his experience and knowledge of local government, we look forward to the opportunity of working with him to ensure BC communities are strong and vibrant, now and in the future.”

Mr. Fassbender was first elected to the city council of Langley in 2002, then as mayor in 2005, 2008 and 2011. He was also appointed to the Select Committee on Local Government Finance (2012-13), which oversaw development of UBCM’s Strong Fiscal Futures report. In 2013, he was elected MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood, and appointed Minister of Education.

As part of today’s announcement, Jacquie Dawes was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Ms. Dawes previously served as Assistant Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
