Federal-Provincial Equivalency Agreement on Wastewater: Update

Since 2012, the federal and provincial governments have been working towards the development of an equivalency agreement on wastewater effluent regulations.  An equivalency agreement would see the federal regulations stand down in favour of a provincial regulatory system, as long as the provincial system has been deemed to be equivalent in effect.

The Province has issued an update on anticipated changes to wastewater discharge authorizations in BC.  The proposed changes are being made in order to facilitate the implementation of the equivalency agreement.  The Province posted the update on May 20th, and is seeking comments within thirty (30) days of the posting prior to moving forward with both the agreement and necessary provincial regulatory amendments.  Comments can be sent to Justin Sabourin, Environmental Management Officer, Ministry of the Environment  (250) 356-0486.
