Transport Minister Announces New Rail Safety Measures

On October 29th, federal Transport Minister Lisa Raitt announced new safety measures in response to the Transportation Safety Board’s final report into the Lac Megantic tragedy.

Included in the safety measures are new rules for applying brakes and securing trains, and a commitment by Transport Canada to improve the oversight of our nation’s railways, through tougher enforcement of safety management systems.

This announcement follows earlier commitments by Transport Canada to enhance emergency response assistance plans, mandate railway risk assessments and improve tank cars.
