Problem Vessels & Structures Manuals Available

A final version of the Province of BC’s ‘derelict vessels’ manual is now complete.

Dealing with Problem Vessels and Structures in BC Waters and Technical Staff Guide on Problem Vessels and Structures can now be downloaded from the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations website.

Dealing with Problem Vessels and Structures is a brief overview of the definitions and responsibilities, with information on the Receiver of Wreck, impediments to navigation, and what to do in cases of pollution. It also includes a useful “Who to Contact” section.

Technical Staff Guide on Problem Vessels and Structures offers more in-depth information on the issue, with definitions of vessel vs. structure as well as federal, provincial, municipal and volunteer roles. The Technical Staff Guide includes a “Questions and Answers” section intended to address most of the problems that communities are facing in regard to this issue. It also includes a useful “Who should you contact” section and a section on web and information links.

As part of the Problem Vessels Working Group, UBCM has been working with Islands Trust, Transport Canada and the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations on completing these documents. The Working Group will continue to meet following the UBCM Convention.
