Thanks to Former Executive Members

With the close of another Convention, UBCM wishes to extend its appreciation and thanks to eight outgoing Executive members: Director Heath Slee, Councillor Barbara Steele, Peter Fassbender, Councillor Harry Kroeker, Chair Joe Stanhope, Mayor Dave Pernarowski, Director Jerrilyn Schembri and Mayor Mitch Campsall. 

Their service and contribution to the UBCM Executive is highlighted below.

Director Heath Slee 

As a director for the East Kootenay RD, Heath joined the Executive in 2007 and served two terms as the AKBLG representative. In 2009 he became Second Vice-President and in 2011, was acclaimed as UBCM President. 

During his six years on the Executive, Heath served as: Chair and member of the Presidents Committee; Chair and member of the Convention Committee, member of the Environment Committee, Community Economic Development Committee, Resolutions Committee, Healthy Communities Committee and Community Safety Committee. As well, this past year he served as Chair of the Nominating Committee.  Other appointments have included FCM Board of Directors, Order of BC, and Rural Resource Roads Committee that was established during his term as Second Vice-President.

Councillor Barbara Steele

As a Surrey city councillor, Barbara joined the Executive in 2007 as Metro Vancouver's appointment to the UBCM Executive. After serving two terms in that capacity, she became First Vice-President in 2009, and began her term as President in 2010. After serving as Past President in 2011-2012, Barbara returned to the Executive in 2012-2013 as the LMLGA's representative on the board.

During her time on the Executive she has served on a number of committees; Chair and member of the Presidents Committee, Chair and member of the Community Safety Committee, Chair and member of the Convention Committee, Chair of the Nominating Committee and member of the Resolutions Committee. During her term as President Barbara also served on the FCM Board of Directors, Order of BC and served on the joint UBCM-Province Elections Task Force.

Peter Fassbender

Peter joined the Executive in November 2011 as one of the first Vancouver Metro Area Representatives after the results of the local government elections left a vacancy on Executive. He was re-elected for a second term in 2012 and continued to serve until his resignation this spring when he became the successful candidate for MLA in the riding of Surrey-Fleetwood. 

Over his two-year term he served as a member of the Resolutions Committee, First Nations Relations and Community Safety Committees. In addition to these appointments, Peter served as UBCM's representative to the RCMP contract management committee, which after undertaking extensive consultations and negotiations, secured the present contract arrangements.

Councillor Harry Kroeker

Serving as the SILGA representative for two terms, Harry first joined the Executive in 2011. During his first term he was a member of the Community Economic Development Committee and Convention Committee. This past year, Harry served as a member of the Environment and First Nations Relations Committees. 



Chair Joe Stanhope


As Chair of Nanaimo RD Joe served two terms as AVICC's representative on the UBCM Executive. For both terms he was a member of the Resolutions Committee and also participated on the First Nations Relations and Environment Committees. Representing coastal communities, Joe was engaged on issues such as the BC Ferries review and local government role in aquaculture operations. 




Mayor Dave Pernarowski


Terrace's mayor, Dave Pernarowski was elected as a Director at Large on the Executive in 2011. He was re-elected in 2012 to the same position. During his two-year term Dave served as Chair and member of the Community Economic Development Committee and member of the Environment Committee. 




Director Jerrilyn Schembri


In 2011 Jerrilyn was elected as a Director at Large from the District of Tumbler Ridge. She was re-elected in 2012 to serve a second term as Director at Large in her capacity as a Director from the Peace River Regional District. During her time on the Executive she served on the Community Safety Committee and Convention Committee.



Mayor Mitch Campsall


As the Mayor of 100 Mile House, Mitch served on the UBCM Executive as the Area Association representative for the NCLGA this past year. As a member of the First Nations Relations and Healthy Communities Committee, Mitch was a strong advocate for northern issues.
