Sjostrom Champions Infrastructure Outreach, Finance Study

President Mary Sjostrom's address Wednesday morning highlighted UBCM's efforts over the past year, referencing UBCM's election platform, infrastructure advocacy, and finance study. Sjostrom highlighted the importance of meeting with Premier Clark leading into Convention, along with several meetings Ministers Bennett and Oakes and other provincial leaders throughout the year.

Looking forward, Sjostrom spoke to UBCM's efforts to engage with the membership in advance of discussions to renew the federal Gas Tax Fund. “We know that local government priorities evolve. What made sense in 2004 when the program was first designed may not be the best idea now,” said Sjostrom. UBCM is seeking direction from Metro Vancouver on its priorities for a new program, and will advocate for greater local choice and an opt out option for Tier 2 communities.

Sjostrom praised the efforts of UBCM's Executive and thanked members who communicated with her throughout the year.
