Province Releases Legislative Proposal for Water Sustainability Act

The Province has released a Legislative Proposal for a New Water Sustainability Act. The proposal represents the final round of consultation before the act is introduced during the spring 2014 legislative session. The deadline for submitting comments is November 15th, 2013.

The proposed Water Sustainability Act is designed to update and replace the existing Water Act. The Water Sustainability Act will make changes in seven key areas, to:

  • Protect stream health and aquatic environments.
  • Consider water in land-use decisions.
  • Regulate and protect groundwater.
  • Regulate water use during times of scarcity.
  • Improve security, water use efficiency and conservation.
  • Measure and report large scale water use.
  • Provide for a range of governance approaches.

Since 2009, the Province has conducted several rounds of consultation on the proposed Water Sustainability Act. The Legislative Proposal marks the final round of consultation before the act is introduced during the spring 2014 legislative session.

The deadline for submitting comments on the Legislative Proposal is Friday, November 15th, 2013.
