A Scientific Approach to Politics

A life spent in science provides an excellent background for political leaders, according Andrew Weaver, MLA for Oak Bay – Gordon Head.

Until quite recently, Weaver, the Green Party's first MLA in BC, was the Lansdowne Professor and Canada Research Chair in climate modeling at the University of Victoria. What we need from politicians, said Weaver β€œis evidence based decision making, but what we often get is decision based evidence making.”

Weaver, echoing comments by Stephen Lewis earlier in convention, said issues like climate change required that we consider the long-term consequences of our current policies. Weaver dismissed the Government's claims that LNG revenues would ever allow the provincial to balance the budget. He also said that LNG development will undermine BC's ability to meet its climate action commitments.

Weaver praised the report Strong, Fiscal Futures, and committed to working with local governments and province to find positive solutions.
