Packaging and Printed Paper Program – Policy Paper Endorsed

The UBCM membership has endorsed a new policy paper on the much-anticipated packaging and printed-paper product stewardship program. Program scope and design, environmental considerations, the role of government, and service levels are just a few of the recommendations being made to producers.

Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC) is preparing to submit a product stewardship plan to the Province in November of this year. UBCM anticipates that a draft plan with be submitted for review and feedback by the end of October 2012. The new product stewardship program is scheduled to come into effect in May 2014.

MMBC is consulting with local governments and other stakeholders to develop a plan that meets the provincial regulatory timelines and requirements.

UBCM has put forward strong recommendations around ensuring an equitable level of service amongst all local governments, requiring producers to be responsible for 100% of the costs of managing packaging and printed paper waste, and minimizing the environmental impact of the new program.

UBCM hopes that recommendations made in the policy paper will help create a stewardship program that meets the needs and interests of all our members.
