Last week's Cabinet shuffle saw Premier Christy Clark appoint Hon. Bill Bennett as the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Mr. Bennett is well acquainted with BC local government, having served previously as Minister of Community and Rural Development.

“Mr. Bennett's appointment is good news for local governments,” said UBCM President Heath Slee. "Bill appreciates the important role played by municipalities and regional districts in the life of our province.UBCM has worked closely with Bill during each of his previous Ministerial appointments, and we know that he has a good understanding of local government.I admire his honesty, his openness andhis respectful approach to problem solving and I look forward to working with him again.”

Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East, also served previously as the Minister for Tourism, Culture and the Arts and the Minister of Energy, Mines & Petroleum Resources. More recently, Mr. Bennett has served on several Select Standing Committees, including Finance and Government Services. Minister Bennett replaces Minister Ida Chong, who was appointed as the Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation.
