Liquor Policy Review

On January 31, 2014, the provincial government released the "Liquor Policy Review Final Report." Upon its release, the Province began a gradual implementation of the recommendations contained in the document. The Province also indicated a desire to work with local governments, through the Local Government Working Group on Liquor Policy, to hear concerns and feedback, and in the development of future liquor policy.

On March 26, 2015, the Province introduced new legislation that included the re-write of the liquor legislation in British Columbia. The Liquor Control and Licensing Act received Royal Assent in May 2015. The legislation is enabling, and over the past year regulations were developed to outline how the Act will be applied. On January 23, 2017, the Act officially came into force, along with a number of policy changes that are consistent with the recommendations in the Liquor Policy Review Final Report. As of June 2017, the Province had implemented 66 of 73 recommendations contained in the Review.

Local Government Working Group on Liquor Policy

The Working Group meets on an as-needed basis, which includes a minimum of one in-person meeting per calendar year. It is chaired by UBCM and the Ministry of Small Business, Red Tape Reduction and Responsible for the Liquor Distribution Branch. Over the past several years, members of the working group have discussed changes related to the Liquor Policy Review, including the recent policy changes related to the new Liquor Control and Licensing Act.
