President Harry Nyce

Harry Nyce was elected President at UBCM's 2009 convention.

Harry Nyce, a Nisga'a Hereditary Chieftain and Kitimat-Stikine Regional District Chair, is the first First Nations President elected to the UBCM Executive. His hereditary chieftain title Sim'oogit Saga'ween means "sharp tooth". Chair Nyce lives in Gitwinksihlkw, BC - the smallest of the Nisga'a communities - and is the Director of the Fish and Wildlife Program for the Nisga'a Lisims Government.

After five years as Gitwinksihlkw band manager, Chair Nyce served the community as elected Chief Councillor for 14 years. Chair Nyce was appointed by the Nisga'a Tribal Council as Resources Negotiator for the settlement of the Nisga'a Land Question, and later worked for the Council as a lobbyist.

Chair Nyce sat on the Task Force for Northwest BC on Transportation, Forestry, Fisheries and Aquaculture and was appointed to the Pacific Salmon Commission's Northern Panel.

In addition, Chair Nyce has chaired the Nisga'a Cultural Artifacts Committee and the Zaul Zap Industries board; co-chaired the Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Park Committee; and served on the boards of the James Samuel Gosnell Memorial Health Centre and the Vancouver Indian Centre.

Married to Deanna, with three children and six grandchildren, Chair Nyce attended a one-room Indian Day School in Gitwinksihlkw, followed by residential school in Edmonton, AB and Port Alberni, BC. He completed his education at the University of British Columbia where he majored in Political Science.
